Stand @french vanilla ice cream{3%cup}(420 g; six small scoops) out of the freezer ~stand{5%min}, until a spoon goes in without a fight. Ice cream blended rock-hard forces you to add milk to get it moving, and that is how a shake ends up thin.

Blend @&(~1)softened ice cream{} with @whole milk{1/2%cup}(120 mL) and @vanilla extract{1/2%tsp}(3 mL) ~whip{20%sec}. Two parts ice cream to one part milk by volume is the line between a shake a straw stands in and a glass of cold milk.

Whip @malted milk powder{2%Tbs}(20 g) into @&(~1)shake base{} ~whip{10%sec}, just to combine — long blending melts it. Leave the malt out and it is a plain shake; that one spoonful is the whole difference between the two lines on the board.
